Family Therapy
Rebuilding connection and communication — because family can be one of the most powerful forces for positive change.
Overview
Family therapy brings family members together with a trained therapist to improve communication, address conflict, strengthen relationships, and better understand how behavioral health concerns affect the family. Sessions are tailored to the family's needs and may focus on parenting support, family transitions, trauma, behavioral concerns, or supporting a family member's treatment and recovery.
Sessions involve two or more family members working with a licensed therapist to identify patterns, improve dialogue, and develop healthy boundaries. We incorporate Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), conflict resolution, and family resilience strategies.
How to Access
Available through our Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic and VOC. It may also be provided through SBE when appropriate and available.
What to Expect
Inclusive Sessions
We welcome all family configurations — parents, children, siblings, grandparents — whoever plays a meaningful role in the family unit.
Identifying Patterns

The first step toward care
Diagnostic Assessments
Understanding your needs — a thorough assessment that shapes an individualized path forward.
Overview
A diagnostic assessment is often the first step in beginning services. A behavioral health professional will discuss your concerns, symptoms, health and treatment history, daily functioning, strengths, and current support system. This information helps the care team identify your needs, determine appropriate services, and develop individualized treatment recommendations.
The assessment is a collaborative, conversational process — not a test. Your clinician listens carefully and uses the information gathered to recommend the services and supports that best fit your situation and goals.
How to Access
Available through our Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic, SBE, or VOC, depending on the referral and program requirements.
What to Expect
Comprehensive Conversation
Your clinician will discuss your concerns, symptoms, health and treatment history, daily functioning, strengths, and current support system.
Needs Identification
The information you share helps the care team identify your needs and determine which services are most appropriate for you.
Individualized Recommendations
You'll receive personalized treatment recommendations that reflect your unique situation, goals, and strengths.
A Foundation for Care
The assessment becomes the foundation for your treatment plan — guiding every step of your care journey at PTW MSI.

Community Support
Helping children, adolescents, and young adults build the skills and supports they need to succeed at home, in school, and in the community.
Overview
Community Support provides individualized, community-based assistance to children, adolescents, and young adults age 21 and under who are experiencing behavioral health challenges. Community Support Specialists work with each young person and their family to strengthen coping skills, improve daily functioning, manage behavioral health symptoms, build healthy relationships, and address barriers that may affect success at home, in school, or in the community.
Services are based on the young person's individualized Plan of Care and may be provided in our office or in natural settings, including the youth's home, school, or community. Community Support is designed to help youth practice skills in the environments where they use them most.
How to Access
Community Support is available through Paving the Way Multi-Service Institute's Core Service Agency for children, adolescents, and young adults age 21 and under. A behavioral health assessment will be completed to determine the youth's needs and whether Community Support is an appropriate part of the individualized Plan of Care. Families may contact Paving the Way directly to begin the intake process. District residents may also contact the DC Department of Behavioral Health Access Helpline for assistance selecting a community-based behavioral health provider.
What to Expect
Individualized Skill Building
Community Support Specialists help youth develop practical coping, communication, problem-solving, social, and daily living skills based on their individual needs and treatment goals.
Support at Home, School, and in the Community
Services may be provided where the young person needs support most. This may include helping the youth apply new skills at home, adjust to school expectations, participate successfully in the community, or prepare for age-appropriate work responsibilities.
Symptom Management
Youth receive developmentally appropriate support in recognizing behavioral health symptoms, identifying triggers, using coping strategies, and reducing the effect symptoms may have on daily functioning, relationships, personal development, and school performance.
Family and Caregiver Support
Families and caregivers may receive mental health education, coaching, and support that helps them understand the young person's strengths, needs, symptoms, and coping strategies. All family-focused support is provided for the direct benefit of the youth.
Building Healthy Supports
Community Support helps youth strengthen positive relationships, increase natural supports, and connect with appropriate community resources that support stability and wellness.
Crisis and Relapse Prevention
Youth and families may work with the Community Support Specialist to recognize warning signs, understand triggers, develop prevention strategies, and use the youth's safety or crisis plan when concerns arise.
Coordination With Youth-Serving Systems
When appropriate and properly authorized, Community Support may include collaboration with family members, schools, health care providers, managed care plans, child welfare, juvenile justice, and other systems involved in the young person's care.

Pediatric Behavioral Health Navigation
DC MAP Care Coordination
Helping pediatric providers and families identify behavioral health resources, navigate referrals, and connect children and adolescents with appropriate services.
Overview
DC MAP care coordination supports pediatric health care providers and families when a child or adolescent needs behavioral health services or community resources. Care coordinators may help identify appropriate therapists, psychiatric providers, behavioral health programs, and other community-based resources; assist families in understanding referral options and next steps; support connections to services; and provide follow-up regarding the status of referrals.
Care coordination is provided in collaboration with the child's pediatric health care provider and is based on the needs identified through the DC MAP consultation or referral. DC MAP care coordination is a short-term referral and resource-navigation service and does not replace ongoing case management, therapy, psychiatric treatment, or emergency services.
How to Access
DC MAP services are initiated through a participating pediatric health care provider. A pediatric provider may contact DC MAP for consultation, referral assistance, or care coordination support for a child or adolescent under their care. Families who are interested in DC MAP should speak with their child's pediatric health care provider.
What to Expect
Resource Identification
Care coordinators help identify behavioral health providers, programs, and community resources that may be appropriate for the child's needs.
Referral Assistance
Families may receive assistance understanding referral options, eligibility requirements, and the steps involved in connecting with a provider or program.
Communication and Follow-Up
With appropriate authorization, the care coordinator may communicate with the family, referring pediatric provider, behavioral health providers, and relevant community resources to support the referral process.
Individualized Navigation
The level of assistance provided depends on the child's needs, the pediatric provider's request, available services, insurance or eligibility requirements, and the scope of the DC MAP program.
Connection to Care
Care coordinators support families in addressing referral barriers and understanding next steps. Availability and acceptance into an outside service cannot be guaranteed.
We Can Help With
- Identifying behavioral health providers and programs
- Navigating referrals and eligibility requirements
- Connecting to community-based resources
- Supporting communication with the pediatric provider
- Follow-up on the status of referrals
